Green Thumb is Ready, Are You?

 In Blog, Spring

Be ready when the snow melts for your Spring Cleanup.

Here’s a list of to-dos:

  • Remove winter wrap and holiday lights.
  • Check the lawns for “treasures” if you have four-legged friends.
  • Rake lawns. Clean up winter debris, twigs, leaves etc.. Be sure to get into shrubs to remove leaves from base of plants. Clean the window wells and behind sheds and decks. Cut back perennial skeletons and grasses. Remove any annuals and  weeds.
  • Prune shrubs to remove broken/damaged branches. Now is a great time to see if there is damage from bunnies and other critters. Don’t be too quick to prune too much unless you are trying to rejuvenate. You don’t want to remove all your spring blooms! If it’s been awhile since you’ve added new soil to your gardens, now is a great time to get that done.
  • Take advantage of the softer ground and dig new edges around the gardens. A string line will help create a perfect edge if you need some help. Apply garden fertilizer to the beds. Add fresh pine mulch to the gardens, as this can make a huge difference. Doing this will have your garden smelling great, looking great, and will help keep the weeds down and the moisture in.
  • Power edge sidewalks and walkways close to the cement. Expert Tip: You’ve got to hear the cement or you’re in too far. Go for definition, not ditches. This will give your property the desired manicured look.
  • Topdress the lawns where there are bare spots and slit seed or overseed. Granular organic compost should be added to the lawns to help establish the seeds and retain moisture, which will help get the lawn through the dry spells. This should be done each spring. Fertilize the lawns.
  • Check your trees and consult a good arborist to thin out the canopy and maintenance prune your trees. We recommend not doing this on your own.

What’s the best day of the week for lawn maintenance?

This is an age old question. Are Thursdays or Fridays really the best days?

Times have changed and COVID has kept us close to home; wanting a lovely garden all week. We grant wishes to our customers and see the positive side to any day of the week!

Are you a cottager? Monday or Tuesday are likely better days so you enjoy the fresh look on your return.

Working from home? Wednesday cutting offers a great treat to the busy work week by providing a nice view and freshness to your property. Wednesday happens to be my favourite cutting day!

What’s yours?
